Chapter 12
Despite being tired and preferring to sleep in, they encouraged each other the following morning to rise early. In the street below, dressed, they sipped coffee from travel mugs. “How cute are these?” she toasted him with hers.
“Yep, whatever.” He rolled his eyes in mock disbelief that she was so excited about the reusable coffee cups they had been provided with. “We’re running late, let’s get a cab.”
Within minutes, their taxi driver was navigating the traffic towards the Brooklyn Bridge, and despite the early hour and the darkness, there were still people around. “This really is the city that doesn’t sleep,” she said looking out the window. “If we were in my home town, Melbourne, there’d be hardly anyone around.”
“It’s busy here, just like London.” He reminded her, especially since it had been five years since she’d lived in Australia.
“I know, but I live in the suburbs, so it’s different,” she said.
The taxi driver dropped them off, and they walked to the bridge, with tourists and those New Yorkers starting the day and getting to work.
They watched the sun rise, excited about the promise of a new day, as the sunshine bounced off apartment block windows and the city was now awash in colour. It was spectacular, and she felt the tingle of being a part of something special in her throat. “Thank you, that was amazing and definitely worth getting up early for.”
A sincere satisfied smile spread across his lips. “Definitely, I enjoyed it too. Come on, let’s walk to Soho and find somewhere to eat.”
They walked along the streets, often looking skyward to admire the architecture. They talked non-stop and the twenty-minute walk flew by as they chatted, each revealing tidbits of themselves.
And over a healthy breakfast, they learned that they liked the same genre of books and movies, although she also admitted to loving romances, which he didn’t like at all.
“Um, not for me, you can watch that on your own,” he said with a roll of his eyes.
After breakfast, they caught a cab to Central Park where they hired bikes and rode around the park. There wasn’t much opportunity to talk, but she loved it. Although the weather was cool, the day was sunny and perfect to be outside.
A couple of hours later, they stopped at a café for a drink before heading back to return the bikes.
“My bottom is so sore,” she chuckled. “But that was so much fun. I didn’t realise the park was so big.”
“That was fantastic. I’m so glad you like being active and healthy,” he said as he placed his arm around her.
“It was fun, and it was a really good idea.”
She was rewarded with a smile that made her tummy quiver. It was hard to believe that Oliver had been so quiet and shy when he was young. He’d developed into a handsome, articulate, confident man, who had women staring at him. She couldn’t count the number of women she’d seen looking at him over the past couple of days when they were together.
